ABOUT THE LCS
As the League Championship Series (LCS) enters its 23rd year, it is important to look back before we look forward. Started by three recreation and park district softball directors in 1987, the LCS began as an opportunity for league players to challenge themselves against other recreation league players. The first event scheduled all three divisions on one weekend and expected about 50 teams. 163 teams showed up for that weekend and players shuttled all over to play their games. Remember at that time there was no Sacramento Softball Complex, no Lembi Park and no Maidu Park. The only three field facility was at Elk Grove and games were played on single fields throughout the region.
Teams are divided by ability based on their league roster and input by a selection committee. Similar to the NCAA Basketball Tournament the event is broken into regions thereby minimizing travel for the teams.
Today the event is played over two weekends with the Coed Division on the third weekend in September and the Men’s and Women’s on the 4th weekend in September. All league winners representing GSSA/ASA public agencies are eligible to participate. The entry fee is just $85 and is only possible through the cooperation and collaboration of the public agencies that support and make up Sacramento ASA and GSSA. Along with this public agency support is the sponsorship of Worth Sports. Worth provides the softballs to play more than 300 games on the two weekends. In addition Worth provides a prize package to teams that unfortunately go 0 – 2.
